It Wasn't My Willpower, It Was My Biology
Rooted & Rising: Rebuild Calm & Strength Naturally
For years, I was stuck in a cycle that I think a lot of women know. I was doing all the things I was "supposed" to do. I'd cleaned up my diet significantly from where it was a decade ago. I was moving my body. I was trying to be consistent. And yet, I felt scattered. The scale wouldn't budge. A quiet, draining noise around food was always humming in the background.
I'd tell myself to be more disciplined. I'd tighten things up, push a little harder, stay more consistent. But the feeling of being all over the place never really went away. It wasn't for a lack of trying. It was for a lack of understanding.
What I've finally learned is that I wasn't fighting a battle of willpower. I was dealing with a biology problem. My body wasn't ignoring me. It was sending out signals I didn't know how to read because the communication line itself wasn't healthy in my gut.
The Realization That Changed the Direction
Somewhere along the way, I stopped asking, "What am I doing wrong?" and started asking, "What is my body actually trying to tell me?" That shift led me to focus on gut health not as a trendy buzzword, but as the actual foundation of how my body communicates with my brain.
The more I learned, the clearer it became. My gut microbiome wasn't just about digestion. It was connected to everything: my energy, my focus, my mood, my appetite regulation, and yes, my weight. When the gut isn't healthy, the signals get scrambled. The brain doesn't get the message that you're full. The stress pathways stay open and overactive. The body holds on instead of letting go.
I realized that for years, I'd been trying to override a system that was fundamentally out of balance. And no amount of willpower was going to fix that.
Healing the Gut Is a Process, Not a Quick Fix
Healing my gut health is still a process. I'm in it right now. This isn't a one-and-done kind of thing. It takes time, intention, and consistency. But for the first time in a long time, I'm on a path that feels like it's working with my body, not against it.
As I've focused on supporting my gut microbiome, something remarkable has happened. The fogginess I didn't even realize was weighing me down has started to lift. I have more clarity and focus. My energy levels are steadier. The scattered feeling is quieting down. It turns out, a lot of the internal chaos I was blaming on a lack of discipline was actually a symptom of an unbalanced system.
The Blocked Pathway: When Stress Keeps the Signals from Getting Through
Here's what I've come to understand: your gut produces a hormone called CCK that's supposed to tell your brain, "We're full. We're satisfied. You can stop now." But when stress is high and the gut isn't functioning well, that signal gets blocked. The pathway is closed. Your brain never gets the message.
So you keep eating. Not because you lack willpower, but because your body is literally not receiving the information it needs to feel satisfied. You can fight it all you want, but you're not going anywhere until you release that stress and open up that pathway.
That realization was huge for me. It meant I wasn't weak. I wasn't failing. I was just dealing with a biological roadblock I didn't know existed.
A few weeks ago, I added another layer of support a natural, science-backed approach that helps support the body's own production of CCK. This has been a game-changer because it's helping to quiet the "food noise" that used to run my days. That endless loop of thinking about what to eat next. Standing in front of the fridge out of habit, not hunger. Reaching for a quick carb because it was just easier. With that noise turned down, I can finally make intentional choices without a constant internal fight.
Two Generations, One Shared Understanding
What makes this even more meaningful is that I'm not walking this path alone. My daughter, Cristina, is 37, and she's in this process with me. We're in very different seasons of life, but we're both learning the same truth: it doesn't matter if you're 37 or 62. Your gut health, your biology, your body's ability to communicate clearly these things matter at every age.
I'm grateful that Cristina is learning this now, in her 30s, instead of decades from now. She can carry this knowledge forward and pass it on to her son, my grandson, who's about to turn 10. This is knowledge that many of us didn't grow up with. I certainly didn't. But it can change the trajectory of how we live, how we age, and how we relate to our own bodies.
The Practical Shifts That Follow
When your body starts to find balance, the practical changes don't feel forced anymore. They feel natural. I've made shifts that are sticking now because my body is in a better place to support them.
I'm more conscious of my plating. Vegetables are the star. I'm leaning into a more Mediterranean way of eating. I've found a rhythm that works for me like having a protein shake around noon to make sure I'm getting what my body needs instead of just filling up on carbs.
My mornings have a rhythm too. I start with a full mug of warm water with a pinch of salt. Nothing else. That's the first thing I put in my body after a night's sleep, because hydration matters. I move my body gently with some lymphatic movements, swinging my arms, waking everything up. It's simple, but it's intentional.
These aren't forced rules. They're choices that feel natural now because my body is in a better place to make them.
You're Not Crazy
If you've been feeling like something is off, like you're trying so hard but nothing is shifting, I want you to hear this clearly: you're not crazy. You're not weak. You're not broken.
It might not be a willpower problem. It might be a biology problem. And once you understand that, everything changes. Not overnight, but steadily. Naturally. In a way that lasts.
